The origin of Capricare®

Dairy Goat Co-operative (N.Z.) Ltd (DGC) developed the world’s first goat milk based nutritional products for infants in 1988.

The Capricare® brand from DGC combines the most recent nutritional science* with state of the art processing and “whole of milk use” to deliver the natural nutritional benefits of goat milk.

DGC was formed in 1984 from an amalgamation of a number of different goat milk co-operatives around New Zealand.

Following success in markets such as New Zealand, Australia and Taiwan, DGC’s export markets have continued to diversify and the formula products are now well established in around 20 countries. From 2003, DGC invested in its own manufacturing facilities – spray drying, dry blending, can manufacturing and canning. These manufacturing plants are all on the same Hamilton, New Zealand, site alongside the company’s head office.

DGC is the world's leading manufacturer of goat milk nutritional powder products. DGC developed the world's first commercialized infant formulae from goat milk, and continues to develop and manufacture a range of consumer packaged nutritional powders based on goat milk.

Capricare® formulae have been launched in the European market as a result of DGC’s submission in 2012 to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). DGC achieved change to the EC Directive to include goat milk formulae for European markets (Directive 2013/46/EU).

Innovation

While the big multinational formula companies have been focused on cow milk based formula, DGC has carved out a niche for formulae based on a different protein source – goat milk.

DGC’s innovation has gone beyond the idea of a different protein source:

  • - The DGC product development team is continually updating the formulations to keep pace with international regulations and nutritional trends, guided by a European-based independent Scientific Advisory Board
  • - DGC’s manufacturing facilities have been developed and built for the purpose of manufacturing goat milk based nutritional powders
  • - DGC has an ongoing programme of world-first research in goat milk nutrition
  • - DGC is the only company in the world to complete double-blind clinical studies on the safety and efficacy of goat milk infant formula (two clinical trials have been completed)
  • - DGC is the company which made representations and submissions to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) to enable goat milk to be recognized in Europe as an approved protein source for infant formula
DGC is owned by farmers who supply milk from the Northland, Taranaki and Waikato regions of the North Island of New Zealand.
